Surfing Rabat

Surfing Rabat, and why we love it!

When people think of surfing in Morocco, places like Taghazout often come to mind first. But those who have surfed with us in Rabat know there’s something very special here. It’s not just about the waves — it’s about culture, community, and that feeling of having a city-lifestyle with surfing combined.

When Ilyass and I were starting our ideas to set-up a surfhouse in Morocco, we had many doubt to be in the south of Morocco (Taghazout-area) or in the surroundings of Rabat. We saw the beauties of both areas, but decided that Rabat lies closer to our values and ways of life. We could not be happier with this decision! Rabat gives us so much joy, both the surfing spots as the city-life and the Moroccan culture.

Here’s why we fell in love with surfing in Rabat — and why so many of our guests do too.

Uncrowded waves Rabat

Rabat beach is most often uncrowded, and that’s a luxury in today’s surf world. Early mornings are pure magic: glassy conditions, soft light, and just a handful of people in the water.

Most of the time, you’ll be sharing waves only with fellow guests from our surfhouse and maybe a few local friends. No battling for waves, no stress — just relaxed surfing and plenty of room to enjoy every ride.

Waves for every level of surfing

One of the things we love most about Rabat is how accessible the waves are for all levels. Whether you’re catching your very first green wave or working on turns and flow, there’s always a peak that suits your level.

Depending on the swell direction and size, we can choose mellow sections for beginners or more powerful peaks for intermediate and advanced surfers. Rabat is a place where progress happens naturally.

Good vibes only

Even on the slightly busier days, the vibe in the water stays friendly and relaxed. Localism simply isn’t a thing here.

In Rabat, everyone shares waves, smiles, and conversations. Locals, travelers, beginners, and experienced surfers all mix together — and before you know it, everyone feels like a friend. That sense of community is something you feel both in the ocean and back at the surfhouse.

Surfing any tide of the day

No tide stress here. In Rabat, there’s no waiting around for “the perfect tide”.

Thanks to the beach setup, there are surfable waves on any tide — low, mid, or high. That means we can surf all day long and focus on enjoying the ocean instead of watching tide charts.

Big swells? No issue!

Too big to surf? In Rabat, that almost doesn’t exist.

The beach is naturally protected by the harbour heads, making it surfable up to 4-meter swells. When the ocean gets really powerful, we even have the option to surf inside the river, where waves are smaller and more manageable.

We’ve even surfed here with a forecasted 6-meter swell — proof that Rabat offers safe and fun options when other spots become unapproachable.

Small waves? Road trip time!

Flat days are rare, but if the waves are on the smaller side, we simply hit the road.

The coastline around Rabat is full of hidden, uncrowded beaches, and Rabat is perfectly located to explore them. A short drive often leads us to fun, empty waves and new scenery — turning a small swell day into a mini adventure in the area.
